If you are evaluating an AI product right now, you are likely drowning in vocabulary that means nothing: copilots, assistants, intelligent automation, agentic capabilities. The terms are deliberately fuzzy. The difference matters.
The working definition
An agentic system is one that perceives state, decides on an action, executes that action across systems, and updates its own model based on the result — without a human in the loop on every step.
Anything less is a feature.
The four-question test
1. Can it act, or only suggest?
If the system surfaces a recommendation and waits for a human to click, it is a suggestion engine. Useful, but not agentic. An agent submits the PO, sends the email, books the meeting, updates the record.
2. Does it operate across systems, or only inside one?
An AI assistant inside your CRM is a feature of your CRM. An agent that pulls signal from your CRM, your call recordings, your billing system, and your support tickets — and then executes against all of them — is operating at a different layer.
3. Does it learn from outcomes?
If the system performs the same way in month twelve as it did on day one, it is not agentic. Real agents track which actions produced which outcomes and adjust.
4. Is it model-agnostic?
Locked-in systems that only call one model from one provider are bets on a single supplier in a market that re-shuffles every quarter. A real agentic platform routes work to whichever model is best for that task today.
Why this matters financially
The premium for an agentic platform is justified by the work it actually performs. The premium for a relabeled suggestion engine is not. Most enterprises are about to spend a great deal of money learning the difference. The ones who learn it before signing will compound a meaningful advantage.
